Being Sheriff

Yesterday at work, I had to sternly tell two spirited teenage girls who wanted to figure skate to put on their face masks or they would have to exit the building. Even worse, I got angry at their defiance and held on to that anger for the rest of the day---until eventually, due to my sheer psychological exhaustion, it reduced itself down into just plain old sadness. Despair. Not even my evening prayers could resolve the absurdity of it all. I said to God: "What next, Lord, just hack the feathers off all the birds and tell them it will make them more humble---the most loyal children of your light?" With that, I closed, put on my pajamas and ate some soda crackers, rounding each sharp corner first before going after the heart.

the earth just sits there
